How to replace the air filter in a 2005 Toyota Camry

Most places that change your oil will also offer to replace your air filter.  It's convenient, but it's also expensive.  You may pay $30 for them to do it, when you could replace it yourself for $10 or so and 10 minutes of your time.  If you're not sure how to replace the air filter in your 2005 Toyota Camry, this article will walk you through the process.

A new air filter can be purchased from any auto parts store, or online, typically for about $10.  Amazon sells a Fram air filter (part# CA9360) for $9.83 right now.  Once you have the new filter, grab either a large Phillips screwdriver or a socket wrench and a 8mm socket.

Pop your hood, then locate the air filter box, located on the right side of the engine compartment (as you're looking at it).  It will be the black plastic box behind the battery with a large hose protruding from the rear.

There are two sensors on the hose in the back of the air filter box; unplugging these sensors will give you more room to work, but it's not necessary.  To disconnect the sensors, push in the tab on each to release it, then pull it out of its connector.

Now you'll need to open the air filter box.  There are two screws -- one on the front side of the box and one on the rear.  They are Phillips screws, but if they are overly tightened, you may not be able to get them out with a screwdriver.  The socket wrench will definitely be easier.

With the screws out, there are plastic hinges on the left side of the box -- lift the lid up from the right side to expose the air filter.  You won't be able to completely remove the lid without disconnecting the hose, but you should be able to open it far enough to remove the air filter.

Now you can install the new air filter.  Three of the corners are rounded and the fourth is straight; the straight corner goes in the the front right corner of the air filter box.  Lay the filter flat and then close the lid (being sure that the hinges are still connected).  Put the two screws back in, and reconnect the sensors if you disconnected them.  Forgetting that last step will result in some engine codes (P0102 and P0113) and a poor start.
